In the past, travel insurance has been looked at as a luxury. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for vacations to be cancelled outside of a traveler's control, or for a traveler to be at risk of illness and be unsure about the quality of medical care in the travel destination. For these reasons, travel insurance has become a better value. A comprehensive travel insurance policy will cost you 5 to 7 percent of the price of your trips.
But before you choose to buy travel insurance, make sure that you're not already covered through your home insurance or health insurance. Your credit card may even contain a travel insurance perk if you paid for your trip with it.
